What is the true impact of road trauma. Thanks to TAC and Vital Strategies we are able to share their stories. Stories of a life with brain injury, quadriplegia, spinal injury and limb fractures. Stories of a loved one lost. Stories that began with a preventable hit pedestrian crash, run-off road crash, head-on crash, intersection crash, bicycle or motorcycle crash. Stories of courage and despair. Real stories of human impact – and our need to apply the Vaccines for Roads and the other safe system actions that will prevent crashes and needless suffering.
Explore the human impact of:
Severe Brain Injury
“For the first month they weren’t sure if she’d survive” Chelsea was 5 year’s old when she was hit by a 4WD and left with a severe brain injury. Chelsea’s Mum Susie immediately finished working to care for Chelsea and is always proud of her progress.
“I don’t mind if I can’t move it that well I just want to keep my leg”. Julie was in an induced coma for eight days after her head-on crash left her trapped in the vehicle. “Every part of my limb has been rebuilt”
Quadriplegia and Paraplegia
“It affects me by obviously not being able to walk…” Antonio was injured in a car crash on the way to work. “I can’t walk but at the end of the day I’m going to go out there and give life a crack”.
“The car crash could have been avoided” Daniela is now a quadriplegic after an intersection crash where a driver ran a red light and hit her car. “I would prefer not to be in this place, as an example for others.”
“I dislocated my neck and became a C6/C7 quadriplegic” Josh was heading to the coast and the car he was in lost control and rolled down a 20-foot embankment. “Being in a wheelchair is not going to hold me back”.
“Each person…is an individual that has a history before an accident and a life after an accident and that it can be huge a struggle to piece themselves back together” Hilary broke her wrist, rib and her neck and is now a C7 quadriplegic after hitting loose gravel and rolling her car.
Head and Brain Injury
“He had to relearn to speak…not walking for about a year” Simon had a closed head injury at age 8 when Simon’s Mum Ros was doing a right hand turn at an intersection and didn’t see the car coming straight through.
“on the Great Barrier Reef, I did some snorkelling…you’ve got a life and you need to live it to the full” Anthony was 6 years old when he was crossing the road and hit by a car. He has the challenge of only having movement of his head and breathing through a ventilator.
“I’ve been a claimant of TAC for 10 years and one month” David was going for a ride on a nice sunny day and was hit by a car, rolled down the bonnet and the car ran him over. With a broken back, 11 broken ribs, broken wrist, collar-bone and jaw it “was quite a big impact”.
“He could make anyone smile no matter what you were going through” Danielle talks about her big brother Scott who was killed in a road crash and the hurt it continues to cause her and her family. “You don’t get over it you just learn to live with the grief every day”.
